Kytherian Brotherhood, Baltimore, MD

In 1939, the Kytherian Brotherhood of Baltimore created a wonderful Hellenic Directory of Baltimore and Maryand, of over 2000 family listings with addresses in addition to loads of other great information.

Many thanks to Ari Vlanton for discovering this book in the Baltimore Public Library.

The office of the newly re-elected Mayor Stratos Charchalakis extends its sincere gratitude to the voting citizens of Kythera for their participation in the October 8 municipal elections. All parties worked hard to address the current issues we face as a community and as every vote is an expression of personal judgement and concern, we honour the faith and responsibility placed on the continuing leadership of this office.

It is with that same democratic principle in mind that we recognize how vital opposition is to policy formulation, therefore it is our duty to encourage the participation of Kytherian citizens across the entire local political spectrum. We also thank those who did not honour us with their vote. We respect your choice, hear your message, and embrace the challenges ahead in refining our social and political agenda towards an inclusive trajectory. During the next five year term we fully intend to uphold the democratic consciousness that distinguishes our region.

GLOBAL ZOOM VIII Review

The Kytherian Society of California hosted its 8th Global Zoom meeting on March 11/12, 2023. 71 participants from 8 countries attended the event, held in collaboration with the Kytherian Genealogy Project by Amalia Samios and Kalie Zervos. The Zoom’s main topic was Sharing About Our Ancestors. By asking participants to pre-register and complete a brief survey, Amaia and Vikki were able to tailor the infomation presented to those who attended.

KSOCA President Vikki Vrettos Fraioli welcomed the participants and offered a brief introduction of the Board Members.

Focusing on family connections and genealogy, Amalia Samios noted how one can glean important information by looking at old photos. Photos may have been taken to commemorate a wedding, or to send to relatives who had emigrated to Australia or to the USA. Clothing may indicate how well off or poor a family was.

The young boy on the right in front is her grandfather Nikolaos Aronis (Anastasopoulos), wearing the same clothing in both photos, even though the two photos were taken years apart.

Amalia shared photos from the Fatseas Photo Collection to illustrate the nuances of photography detective work.
Nina Conomos recognized relatives; Cynthia Cavalenes-Jarvis saw photos of her grandparents; and Georgia Marudas noted her mother and aunts were in one of the photos.

Eugenia (Psaltis) Nobis
June 1, 1927 - January 7, 2023

The KSOCA mourns the loss of Eugenia (Psaltis) Nobis, a long time member of the Kytherian Society. Eugenia passed away peacefully at her home in San Francisco, with her loving children by her side on January 7, 2023.

Eugenia was the daughter of James & Panagiota Psaltis. Kytherian born Dimitrios, and Eugenia’s brother Arthur, were among the founding members of the KSOCA in 1950.

She will be dearly missed by all.

Genevieve Marie Moulos

October 15, 1934 - September 16, 2022

The KSOCA mourns the loss of long time member Genevieve Moulos. Ginger was active in the KSOCA for many years, aways attending our luncheons with her children and grandchildren who always helped out by passing out the raffle prizes. Her daughter Elaine, served as president from 2005-2011 and currently holds the position of Vice-President. Our sincere condolences to the family.
May her memory be eternal.

Genevieve Marie Moulos (aka Ginger) a long-time resident of Sacramento, died peacefully of natural causes at the age of 87 on Friday, September 16, 2022.
Ginger was a Fulbright Scholar with a master’s in Psychology and enjoyed 35 years teaching High School for the San Juan School District where she taught Home Economics, Foods, Psychology, Economics, World History, Civics and Typing. She also worked alongside her husband, Jim Moulos at the family restaurant, Souperb Salads from 1980-1992. After retiring in 2000, Ginger was a Deacon and Elder and served tirelessly in the Women’s ministry and Food bank at Arcade Baptist and Christ Community Church. She also volunteered for Strategic Renewal International (SRI – Leading prayer mentoring) for 5 years. She is survived by: sister Jeanne Ward, children Elaine and Greg Moulos and Stacey Larsen and five grandchildren, Rachel and Sophia Larsen and Nick, Jacob and Natalie Moulos.

In addition, Amalia Samios, from the Kytherian Genealogy Project by Amalia & Kalie, gave an update on her trip to Kythera this summer where she visited all of the cemeteries on the island and took over 7000 photos. She is slowly uploading them to her website: www.kytheriangenealogy.com.

Prof. Basil Peter Leftheris, PhD
May 11, 1930 - November 28, 2021

The KSOCA mourns the loss of Vasilis Leftheris, the father of one of our KSOCA members, Dr. Katerina Leftheris. Our sincere condolences to the family. May his memory be eternal.

Prof. Vasilis P. Leftheris passed away on November 28, 2021 at the age of 91 from complications due to the COVID virus.

Prof. Leftheris was born on May 11, 1930 in Kythira, Greece. At a young age, he showed an aptitude for mathematics and physics, graduating 3rd in his high school graduating class.

With the help and understanding of his father, a seaman with the Greek Merchant Marines, Vasilis emigrated to Montreal Canada where he worked and attended McGill University. He obtained his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering.

While at McGill, he met his wife, Isobel while working at the Niagra Falls hydroelectric plant.

After finishing McGill, Basil married Isobel and obtained a scholarship to study thermodynamics and engineering of internal combustion engines at the University of Birmingham in the UK. After he obtained his advanced degree, he returned to Petersboro Canada where he began his engineering career working on atomic energy projects for General Electric.

Kythera Summer Edition 2022

welcome to the sounds of silence

As any visitor to Aphrodite's island will agree, the island has that something special about it. If you could bottle it, you’d make millions. But silence is uncatchable. Because that’s what it is. This fragile, beautiful sense of absolute silence that sits in harmony with the natural world. A silence that now is at risk.

The island has been known by many names throughout history. The Minoans called it Porfyroussa, the Venetians Cythera, while the locals affectionately refer to it as Tsirigo. Today it is known as Kythera.
This deep silence that pervades everything. The migratory birds fly through it, the sounds of the winds amplify it while the ancient rock walls absorb and reflect it. Kythera's silence bears witness to the natural world. It keeps our inner and outer worlds in balance.

Regardless of whether we are short term visitors or long-term residents, we are all custodians of this majestic silence. Tread lightly and enjoy your summer.

The KSOCA mourns the loss of long time member, Elly (Psaltis) Condos. Elly was the daughter of Dimtrios (James) & Panagiota Psaltis. Kytherian born Dimitrios, and Elly’s brother Arthur (Athanasios), were among the founding members of the KSOCA in 1950. She will be dearly missed by all.

Elly Condos was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend. She passed away of natural causes on 14 May 2022 at the age of 95 in the comfort of her home surrounded by family.

Elly was born June 10, 1926 to Greek immigrant parents from Mitata, Kythera and Demeni, Peloponnesus. She was born in Los Gatos, CA and was raised in San Francisco. Her parents were involved in building the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in San Francisco, the oldest Greek Orthodox church west of the Mississippi, and were charter members of several Greek support clubs that still exist to this day. She was an active member in the Kytherian Society and met her husband Anthony “Tony” Condos at a dance in her Greek community. He proposed to her at the Cliff House in San Francisco, and the rest was history. They were married in 1954 and had the best life together, traveling to various places around the world: Australia, Belgium, Greece, France, England, Mexico, to name a few. They made lifelong friends with people from their travels, and were active members of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in San Jose. Elly was also an accomplished artist, pianist, and seamstress, studying art in college and learning to paint from her mother. Her paintings, as well as her mother’s, are still cherished by her family. She made dresses for her niece, helped sow Greek dance costumes for her grandchildren, and enjoyed knitting gifts for loved ones.

The Kytherian Society of California mourns the loss of long time member and past president (1961-1963), Ted Cominos.
Sincere condolences to his family.
May his memory be eternal.

Theodore Harry Cominos Sr – ‘Ted’ – passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 28, 2022. He was aged 97.

Ted was born, raised, lived and worked the entirety of his life in Salinas, save for his service during WWII and attending college and law school. Salinas was a city that he was extremely proud to call ‘home’. Much like his father before him, Ted walked the streets of OldTown Salinas daily for approximately 85 years, and could be found going into his law office every weekday until the age of 96.

Born the son of Greek immigrants, Harry & Helen Cominos (both of the island of Kythera), Ted grew up working in the family business (the Cominos Hotel Bar & Grill) before being drafted into the armed services. He attended Lincoln Elementary School, Washington Jr High School, and Salinas High…before going on to graduate law school from the University of San Francisco.

Global ZOOM VI - Review

The Kytherian Society of California held its 6th Global ZOOM on April 9, 2022. Over the course of seven hours and forty minutes, we had 84 participants from all over the USA, Australia, Greece, UK, Canada, Ireland, France and Paraguay.

Peggy Vassilou, KIPA representative, gave a very informative update on the Wind Turbine situation. Donations are urgently needed to continue the legal fight against the installation of these colossal turbines all over our pristine island. Please consider making a donation, no matter how small, to help in this effort.

Helen Tzortzopoulos, FMK President was en route to Kythera and therefore unable to attend. Dean Poulos read a message from Helen stating: "...the FMK signed the contract with the architect, Stephanos Tavaridis and his team, who were chosen pursuant to an open competition that we held last year for the submission of a concept of design for the museum. This completed file, with all necessary engineering plans, conforming to E.U. museum specifications, will then be handed to the Mayor, Mr. Charchalakis to procure funds through the E.U. or Prefecture of Attiki. We can now, finally, officially launch our museum campaign!!!
We are still waiting on the Academy of Athens to sign the Memorandum in relation to the museology study which, though agreed, has been pending for some time now. Once this has been done, we can officially call on everyone to submit their family stories, photos, documentation etc., to our email address being set up specifically for this purpose. The academic who will be supervising all the research and collating the data will be only too happy to take part in the presentation of our Migration Museum project.
I think that a specific zoom meeting is probably the best way of going forward with this project of ours where the team will be able to answer questions, hear opinions and share ideas. Bear in mind that our Migration Museum is the first of its kind in Greece which makes it a particularly ambitious undertaking for the FMK and we trust that everyone with some Kytherian affiliation will find the need to become a part of this venture.”

The Kytherian Society of California is deeply saddened by the loss of philo-Kytherian James Argiros. Jim was the husband of the late Jeannie Chlentzos Argiros, daughter of long time members Angelo and Stamatina Chlentzos. He will be dearly missed by all.

James Spiro Argiros
October 3, 1934 - March 26, 2022

James (Jim) Spiro Argiros was born on October 3, 1934 in San Francisco, California and died on March 26, 2022 in Modesto, California. He grew up in Richmond, graduated high school in 1952 before attending college and earing his Associates Art Degree. After college Jim spent 6 years in the Army both in active and reserve duties serving his country. Jim spent his entire professional career in grocery retail and merchandising and retired after 35 years in the industry in 1997. Long- time residents of the East Bay, Jim and Jeannie Argiros lived in San Ramon for 36 years before retiring and moving to the central valley where Jim lived the past 25 years. Preceded in death by his loving wife Jeanne, who passed in 2014, Jim moved to Manteca after her passing and relocated to a Del Webb community where he enjoyed spending time with friends in his community. Jim, fondly know to all as “Jimmy the Greek”, was a devoted husband, father and servant of the Greek Orthodox community. But to most, he was a fun outgoing individual who loved dancing, entertaining and spending time with friends and family. He is survived, loved, and will be missed by his two sons, Spiro Argiros and Van Argiros; daughter in laws Angela and Cathy; grandchildren Carson, Stephanie, James, Zachary, Alexandra and Rachael.

Celebration of Life “ ZOOM"
January 22, 2022

On Jan.22, 2022 members and friends of the Kytherian Society of California joined together in a ZOOM to honor those who had passed in the last couple of years. We usually do this at our annual Panigyri luncheons but for the past 2 years we have not been able to meet in person due to COVID.

A member of each famiy shared photos/memories of their loved one and then everyone had an opportunity to relfect and share thier own personal memories.

May their memory be eternal.

Those we remembered were: Andrew Stathis, Marie Cominos, Fawaz Khanachet, Teddi Chlentzos Zes, and Elaine Kassimatis.

2021 Global ZOOM Panigyri

The second KSOCA Global Zoom Panigyri took place on October 9, 2021. Over a span of almost 8 hours, 78 attendees from USA, Australia, and Greece joined in on the virtual event, which marked the fifth Global Zoom gathering of Kytherians from around the world.

The KSOCA business meeting included an opening prayer from Fr. Niko Bekris of Resurrection Greek Orthodox Church in Castro Valley, CA, and the Kytherian Hymn sung by Dr. Tikey Zes, Honorary Kytherian and husband of the late Theodora Chlentzos Zes. A moment of silence was observed for the passing of five KSOCA members: Andrew Stathis, Marie Cominos, Fawaz Khanachet, Theodora Zes, and Elaine Kasimatis.

President Vikki Vrettos Fraioli introduced the KSOCA Board and noted the KSOCA has 37 paid members for this year. She shared a brief update of activities, noting that despite being the second year of not having an in-person luncheon, five Global Zoom gatherings have been held!

Scholarship Chair Melissa Neofes Mischak presented two $1500 scholarships to Hannah Moore, daughter of Cynthia Moore and granddaughter of Pan Coukoulis, and Grant Gallaway, son of Kate and Wally Gallaway and grandson of Mary (Alfieris) and Rich Lind. Both recipients spoke briefly on their studies and interests. Hannah was accompanied by her sister Julia Moore, a 2017 scholarship recipient, and Grant zoomed in during sports practice on the lacrosse field. The KSOCA has awarded $22,000 in scholarships since 2008.

May 25, 1952 - September 7, 2021

The Kytherian Society of California mourns the sudden loss of Elaine Kasimatis. Elaine first joined the KSOCA in 2016 when she attended the Panigyri Luncheon where her father, long time member Armandus Kasimatis, was among those being memorialized. She immediately befriended everyone and even discovered one of her past CSU Sacramento students was a member. Everyone joyfully welcomed her to the KSOCA and looked forward to seeing her at future events. She will be dearly missed by all. Eternal be her memory.

2016 Panigyi Luncheon - Elaine winnng a raffle prize!

Elaine Kasimatis was born in Bakersfield. She passed away unexpectedly at the age of 69.

In 1955, Elaine’s family moved from Bakersfield to Davis, where she grew-up and made her lifelong home.

From a young age, Elaine was passionate about mathematics. She persevered and overcame many challenges to earn a Ph.D. in pure mathematics as well as a M.A. in Mathematics Teaching along with elementary and secondary teaching credentials in both math and multiple subject. Her breadth of expertise in mathematics and education made her a unique mathematician. Elaine was a faculty member at CSU Sacramento for over 30 years, where she continued teaching until her passing.

Eternal Be Her Memory...

Theodora Chlentzos Zes
February 28, 1933 - July 23, 2021

The Kytherian Society of California has lost another legend. Teddi Chlentzos Zes passed away July 23 with her family by her side. She will be dearly missed by all.

Teddi was the daughter of Angelo Chlentzos and Stamatina Mavromatis both from Christoforianika, Kythera. Both of her parents were active in the KSOCA and Teddi helped out since she was a teenager. Eventually, she would serve as secretary for many, many years. Our Panigyri’s will never be the same without her bubbly personality and infectious smile.

Our sincere condolences go out to her husband Tikey and the entire family.

May her memory be eternal.

Teddi, as she was affectionately known, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family. Born in San Francisco, she was the first of two daughters of immigrant parents, Angelo and Stamatina Chlentzos. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Teddi dedicated time and service to her community for many years, teaching Sunday school and serving as secretary at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Ascension in Oakland and later by singing in the Choir at the St. Nicholas Church in San Jose. She was also active in the Kytherian Society of the Bay Area. Teddi worked as a teacher’s aide in the San Jose Unified School District for many years and especially loved her yard duty responsibilities where she was known for blowing her loud whistle while patrolling the playground. Teddi was loved by all who knew her because of her wonderful personality and sense of humor. She always knew how to work the room in social settings, spreading joy everywhere she went. She is survived by her husband Tikey Zes, her three children, Athan , Evan and Anna, and two grandchildren Alex and Evan. Teddi was an amazing mother in law and woman who exemplified grace, compassion and kindness for all. I learned so much from her and I am forever changed by knowing her and loving her. The boys had a fun loving Yiayia who loved to play board games and eat chocolate & waffles. They adored her and She will be missed beyond comprehension. We will honor you Teddi by remembering to lean into joy and appreciate our life as you have in all your days. Thank you for the example you have set and we hope to make you proud. Family and friends are invited to attend the Trisagion at 7:00 PM Wednesday August 4th and Funeral Services Thursday August 5th at 12:30 PM. Both services will be held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church located at 1260 Davis Street San Jose CA 95126. Teddi loved flowers and the Philoptochos. Flowers or donations to the Philoptochos Society of The Greek Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas San Jose are welcomed. May her memory be eternal.

The Kytherian Society of California hosted the third successful Global Zoom on March 20/21, 2021. Over the course of almost seven hours, 80 participants from seven countries received updates on Kytherian happenings.

Helen Tzortzopoulos, president of the Friends of the Museum of Kythera offered an update on FMK projects and noted the bi-monthly Creative Kythera Zoom presentations featuring artists from are increasing in popularity. Helen also spoke about the new Migration Museum in Agia Pelagia. KAA president Emmanuel Alfieris presented a PowerPoint on the proposed Migration Memorial Statue and bench in Agia Pelagia, and requested feedback from Zoom participants on the location of the statue. The Zoomers unanimously and enthusiastically recommended the statue should be placed by the entry to the Agia Pelagia pier. In addition, participants also heard updates on the wind turbines; COVID-19 on Kythera; and Vana Argyris spoke about the Panhellenic International Theater Festival for Young People.

Fawaz Khanachet
March 21, 1943 - March 4, 2021

It is with extreme sadness we report the passing of beloved KSOCA member Fawaz Khanachet. Fawaz attended all of our luncheons with his wife Connie Vrettos Khanachet, as well their daughters and grandchldren. On occasion he baked the Artoklasia bread and prepared luncheon meals for our Panigyri’s. Fawaz was always there to lend a hand. He will be dearly missed by all.

Fawaz Khanachet passed away peacefully on March 4, 2021 in his home in Danville, CA, surrounded by family. He was called to the Lord after fighting a long, valiant battle with pancreatic cancer over the past two years. He was just a couple weeks shy of his 78th birthday.

Fawaz was born on March 21, 1943 in Damascus, Syria to Rizkallah and Julia Rizk Khanachet. Fawaz received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Damascus in 1967, and then moved to San Francisco, CA. He worked for a couple of years before attending graduate school at Stanford University, where he received his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering in 1971. He met his beloved wife, Connie Vrettos, in 1968 soon after moving to San Francisco. They were married in 1970 and had two daughters, Julianne (Julie), born in 1973, and Dina, born in 1977. Fawaz worked as a civil engineer for various companies in the private sector, ending his career as a Senior Project Manager for the Alameda County General Services Agency where he worked for 15 years until he retired in 2013.

Marie Cominos
August 19, 1928 - December 25, 2020

The KSOCA mourns the loss of long-time member Marie Cominos. Marie was a devoted member of the KSOCA for many years. After retiring and moving to Oregon several years ago, even though she was unable to attend our luncheons, she continued to make generous donations to our memorial & scholarship funds.
Her father George was one of the founding members of the KSOCA and the first president from 1950-1951.
Her sweet demeanor will be missed by all. Our sincere condolences to the Cominos family. Eternal be her memory.

On December 25th, 2020, Marie Cominos, loving daughter and mother, passed away at home. Marie was born on August 19,1928, in Salinas, California, to George and Helen Cominos. She attended school in Salinas as well as Hartnell College. Marie worked for the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office in Salinas for 30 years.

Marie was an active and devoted member of the Salinas community especially St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church. She participated in all aspects of the community’s spiritual life and volunteered at various events. Within the community she served as Troop Leader for Girl Scouts of America and volunteered with the Monterey County Hospice Foundation and the Monterey County Historical Society. Marie was considered the historian of the Cominos family. She loved her family, their history and their Greek heritage. She worked hard to preserve the history of the Cominos Hotel and it’s role within the Salinas community.
